Description |
Judith Joy Ross (American, b. 1946) Untitled, from Eurana Park, Weatherly, PA, 1982 Gelatin silver printing-out paper print, 10 x 8 inches Written on back: 'Untitled' from Eurana Park, Weatherly, PA 1982 Judith Joy Ross 1989. Ross is known for black and white portraits made with an 8 x 10 inch view camera and a process known as printing-out paper prints. In this process, the paper is directly exposed to the negative in a procedure that could take a few minutes or a few hours. After printing, Ross tones the images in brown or gray shades, which has lead to comparisons of her work with the work of early 20th century photographers such as Eugène Atget, Lewis Hine, or particularly Walker Evans, in its ability to capture portraits of contemporary America. This is apparent in the photograph of three young girls eating ice cream, enjoying a childhood summer day in their bathing suits, simply rendered in the manner of classic portraiture. |
