Description |
Etching titled "Miss Modern Venus, 1939" by Reginald Marsh (1898-1954). The lighthearted print features a beauty contest that supposedly took place at Coney Island, Brooklyn's seaside amusement park. In the foreground the winner, adorned with her banner and holding a trophy, smiles brazenly at photographers as they take her picture. The emcee next to her makes the congratulatory introductions, while around them the beachfront audience gawks from distance. In "Miss Modern Venus," the figures are academically drawn to resemble those traditional, sharply gender-divided prototypes: youthful, muscular male bodies after Michelangelo, the voluptuous women Rubens. |
