Description |
The Bird Mask is a fabric mask, made out of red woven reeds and fiber, and a handwoven beak, in the shape of a a bird--possibly a tanager. From the Embera Wounaan culture, the mask may come froma tradition of jailbana's (healers) who use woven masks (which portrays animals) for ceremonies. The mask is made through "green palm fronts [which are] shredded by hand, extracting the internal fibers as thin as thread. After drying in the sun, these fibers are dyed in mixtures using roots, berries, and seed pods." (RFB Woven Art, 2024) |
