Description |
Engraving by Marco Dente de Ravenna (active 1515 - 1527) titled "Polyphemus and Galatea." This engraving was derived from a now lost ancient relief. Dente da Ravenna suggests the shallow space of a bas-relief and the hardness of marble, but then changes their character. He treats the relief as a pictorial space - a shallow box with cast shadows whose striated background creates a lively visual pattern. The figures, most particularly Polyphemus, are not only anatomically deft, but rhythmically organized, creating a gentle curving action across the surface and mitigating the hardness of fictive stone. |
