Description |
This Demon mask is made from mould-made of terracotta, possibly the demon Humbaba, dating from Ur III (Third Dynasty) to Old Babylonian Period. Collector, Connoisseur Catalogue: Mould-made faces with suspension holes are found at many Mesopotamian sites. Although they were vary sometimes in details, typically they were vertically striated bangs (here abraded) and a moustache or beard which terminates in opposing curls below the chin (here the ends broken off). The face shows a menacing fusion of animal and human characteristics. The exaggerated grimace bares all the teeth and causes the facial surface to wrinkle grotesquely. |
