Description |
Engraving by Agostino Musi (ca. 1490-after 1536) titled "Apollo and Daphne," from Salamanca edition. The Greco-Roman sun god Apollo was known for numerous erotic exploits with both men and women, most of which ended in tragic frustration. He pursued the unwilling nymph Daphne, who cried out to her father, a river god, for help. Here we see his answer to her plea: twisted with anguish and repulsion, she is being transformed into a laurel tree just as the armed god, off-balance in his chase, grasps her long hair. |
